Helpful Tips For Moving House
Moving house can be stressful. However, with some planning and foresight, you can make it easy and stress-free. Below are our top tips to make your home move more painless.

1. The Removal Company
2. Declutter Weeks Beforehand
Once you have your moving date, declutter. You can sell old toys and clothes that are no longer used or give them to charity. Go through each room, removing or labelling things you no longer need.
Check lofts, sheds, garages, and outdoor spaces for anything you no longer need in your new home. Also, if you need to dump garden waste or broken furniture, you will find a large skip or skip bag at DJ Hanley’s waste and skip hire here.
3. Boxes and Bags
Start collecting boxes as soon as you can. Your local shop will have loads they will be delighted to give you. However, stick to boxes you can lift (Small and Medium). Don’t fill large ones, as you won’t be able to carry them.
Clear plastic bags are ideal for clothes, bedding, and cushions. Don’t use black bags for packing; you could mistake them for rubbish and dump them.
4.Start Packing
The sooner you start packing, the better. Take your time and do one room at a time. Only pack things you can do without, not everyday items. Labelling every box and bag with the room it is from (your bedroom, girl’s room, sitting room, or spare bedroom) makes unpacking easier.
Also, pack your clothes, shoes, and bedding in suitcases and travel bags to save space. DJ Hanley supplies boxes and crates for free with your move.
5. Personal Folder
When you are nearing the move, have all your documents (Bank books and statements, passports, birth certificates, etc.) together in one lockable box or folder. Keep this box or folder safe, adding anything important you find during packing.
6. Disassemble Furniture in Advance
Take apart large furniture pieces like beds, desks, and tables before moving day. Keep all screws, bolts, and small parts in clearly labelled bags taped to the furniture for easy reassembly later.
7. Take Photos of the Electronics Setup
Before disconnecting your electronics, take several photos of the cable setups to make it easier to reassemble them later. These pictures are helpful for rewiring TVs, computers, and hi-fi systems later.
8. Utility Bills
Before the move, sort out all new utility bills, including gas, electric, broadband, house insurance, etc. Also, cancel utilities that are no longer needed. Write a list of what you have to cancel and what needs renewing. Include items like car insurance and changing addresses with banks and building societies.
You can also use the An Post mail redirection service to ensure all your posts find your new address. Also, tell friends, colleagues, schools, etc., of your move, and provide them with your new address if necessary.
9. Prepare your house for Moving Day:
Make sure pathways are clear on the day of your move. Ensure there is enough space for the removal team to manoeuvre. In addition, ensure your movers have clear instructions on what needs moving and what’s staying.
10. Get to know the new house layout
Knowing the layout of your new house is essential. Planning where all the furniture goes in advance helps the movers place it faster and ensures it goes to the correct rooms
11. Check Out Your New Area
If you have the time, look around your new home area for an hour. For instance, look for local shops, pubs, restaurants, garda stations, bus stops, schools, and libraries. Also, find your nearest supermarkets and butchers. Don’t forget the best (Free) parking places when friends visit your new home.
12. Overnight Survival Bag
When you have done everything and the big day arrives, carry your survival bag. It should contain medicine, pills, asthma inhalers, wet wipes, personal items, cash, change of clothes and anything else you might need during the move and the first night in your new home.
13. Coordinate with your moving company
Precise communication with your removal company is necessary for a successful move. Ensure they have the correct contact information, and verify the pickup and delivery times several days before the move.
14. Take stock of your goods
Before the movers leave, take inventory of your belongings. Check each room to ensure it is empty and everything is on the removal truck.
15. Take breaks and drink water to stay hydrated
Moving house or office is physically demanding and strenuous on your body, so take regular breaks and drink fluids during the day. Additionally, offer a drink to the moving crew (Tea, coffee or water), especially if they are working through lunchtime to get the job done.
